Everything is a lightweight, yet powerful search engine for PC. Everything enables you to instantly locate files and folders on your computer so you can open, execute, or delete them as you desire. Even hidden files are detected so you can access them without having to alter your Windows “Folder Options.” If you are a fan of “Spotlight” for Mac, then you will love this application. To use Everything, type in the name of the file or program you are searching for. While you type, it searches through every file on your hard drive and displays the files relevant to your search.

What is so great about Everything?

  • Perhaps Everything’s most amazing features is that it does not rely on indexing to function. It is a stand alone application without any services running in the background. Windows built-in search relies on indexing, which takes up a great deal of computer resources all the time. Even with indexing, Windows built in search engine functions very slowly and from my experience, lacks accuracy.

When might you use Everything? Here are a few examples of when I find it handy.

  • Sometimes programs are difficult to uninstall, especially programs which turn out to be spyware. After running a program’s uninstaller, I search for the it with Everything. Often I find several files that the uninstaller left behind which I do not want left on my PC.
  • People ask me to take a look at their computer and speed things up all the time. Sometimes I find it is difficult to find files on their computer so I carry Everything with me on my USB drive. It enables me to get the job done much faster than searching for the files by hand.
